Consequences of tropical rainforest conversion to tree plantations on fine root dynamics and functional traits

چکیده
Despite the crucial role of fine roots for water and nutrient uptake, soil biological activity ecosystem carbon cycling, response root dynamics to rapidly advancing land-use change in tropics is still poorly understood. To address this uncertainty, we investigated consequences tropical forest conversion intensively managed tree plantations a suite functional traits. We analysed morphology (diameter, specific length (SRL), tissue density) chemistry, as well lifespans four prevalent systems lowlands Sumatra (Indonesia), namely natural forest, jungle rubber, rubber oil palm monocultures. Fine production was estimated using three independent approaches (sequential coring, ingrowth cores, mini-rhizotrons). Contradicting expected trend from more conservative acquisitive traits with increasing intensity, found that SRL density were significantly higher trees, while diameter largest trees N content lowest system. Median longevity top 11% (238 days) than (211 days), 50% greater (140 (125 days). (ranging between 2 9 Mg ha−1 year−1) stands, but annual totals varied depending on methodological approach. Conversion lowland agricultural altered community-level morphology, longevity, likely cycling activity. However, intensification did not consistently lead systems; rather, differences driven by species-specific trait syndromes especially palm.

in fact, this study focused on the following questions: 1. is there any difference between the effect of functional/notional approach and the structural approaches to language teaching on the proficiency test of efl learners? 2. can a rather innovative language test referred to as "functional test" ge devised so so to measure the proficiency test of efl learners, and thus be as much reliable an...

Tropical deforestation for the establishment of tree cash crop plantations causes significant alterations to soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. Despite this recognition, the current Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) tier 1 method has a SOC change factor of 1 (no SOC loss) for conversion of forests to perennial tree crops, because of scarcity of SOC data. In this pantropic study,...

15 صفحه اولFunctional Traits and Water Transport Strategies in Lowland Tropical Rainforest Trees
Understanding how tropical rainforest trees may respond to the precipitation extremes predicted in future climate change scenarios is paramount for their conservation and management. Tree species clearly differ in drought susceptibility, suggesting that variable water transport strategies exist. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, we examined the hydraulic variability in trees in a lowland tro...
متن کاملBelowground fine root productivity, traits, and trees.
A long-standing debate in plant ecology is how plant diversity – including species richness, functional, and phylogenetic diversity – determines primary productivity aboveground and belowground (Tilman et al., 1997; Cadotte et al., 2009). A leading mechanism linking diversity and productivity posits that diverse assemblages of plants are more likely to complement each other in resource acquirin...
